A Brief History of Screenprinting
Screen printing or serigraphy also known as silk screening is a form of printing that creates a sharp image by stretching a pourous fabric { originally silk) but since the 1940`s polyester or nylon over a frame, this used to be timber but is now generally metal. The size of the holes in the screen determines how fine the screen print will be.
The screen is placed on top of the material and ink is poured onto the screen and with the use of a squeege the ink is forced through the holes in the screen that have been created to form the design.
The screen is then removed and the t shirt is dried using heat, this is a brief description of how screen printing works in fact it is a true skill that takes time to learn and has more processes than I have outlined here.
Screen printing is used for just about any surface or material from pens to balloons, roadsigns, virtually anywhere you look you will see evidence of screenprinting.
Screenprinting is currently being challenged by digital printing in it`s many forms it has some advantages such as easier to set up, less mess, more environmentally friendly and the ability to do one off custom prints but screenprinting still wins for big quantities when it comes to price. There will always be a place for screenprinting but the digital printing age will change the way the traditional screen printing company operates.
Screenprinting became popular during the first world war as a way of printing banners and supportive material for the troops.
